Omikron “particularly threatening for children”: More than 70,000 new infections in Germany

On the day after the new government took office in Germany, the Robert Koch Institute reports more than 70,000 new infections with the coronavirus in the past 24 hours.

Problems with the RKI numbers?

The RKI corrected the numbers from the early morning in the morning, the number of deaths was updated from 527 to 465.

Due to the lower numbers in the past few days, the 7-day incidence has fallen to 422 – initially the RKI even stated 338. However, there were doubts that the health authorities would still manage to report all cases.

At 68.5 percent, the vaccination quota in Germany is still low in an EU comparison.

How dangerous is Omicron?

The new Health Minister Karl Lauterbach said on Wednesday evening: “We need a general vaccination obligation. Because we will not be able to cope with a variant like Omikron if we have as large vaccine picks as we have to fear if we enter one without a vaccination requirement go in such situation. “

And further: “We have to assume that the Omikron variant is particularly threatening for children – unfortunately that is the case – that the Omikron variant not only spreads faster, but unfortunately also affects children more heavily and thus leads to more hospital admissions will.”

The head of the DIVI intensive care register Christian Karagiannidis writes on Twitter: “Now the crucial question is how many infected people with Omikron are subject to intensive care. At Delta we are currently around 0.6%. I very much hope that this is significantly lower with Omikron.”

The situation in eastern Germany remains particularly tense. In the Saxon district of Meißen, the 7-day incidence is over 2,500, in Hildburghausen, Thuringia, over 1,600. The district administrator of the Hildburghausen district, Thomas Müller (CDU) demanded according to Südthüringen.de from the state government more vaccine, more mobile vaccination teams and more tests. Müller wrote that the situation was getting completely out of hand. Hildburghausen has the lowest vaccination rate in all of Thuringia with less than 50 percent.

Are in a nursing home in Rudolstadt in Thuringia according to the FAZ 28 of the 147 residents died of Covid-19. A third of the elderly people in the residence were not vaccinated against Covid-19. Apparently, the relatives of the residents had also refused to have them immunized against Covid-19.

This Thursday at 2 p.m., the minister-presidents of the federal states will discuss for the first time in a video link under the direction of the new Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz. At this meeting, however, the corona crisis should not be discussed exclusively.

On Wednesday, Karl Lauterbach (SPD) took over the official duties of health minister from Jens Spahn (CDU). In the fight against the Omikron variant, but also against the high number of new infections, Lauterbach primarily relies on booster vaccinations.
