The omikron variant of the coronavirus now accounts for 20 percent of all corona infections in Belgium. Virologist Emmanuel André reports this on Twitter on Monday and Marc Van Ranst confirms it.

Last week, ten percent of all infections were due to omikron. The percentage continues to double. Just two weeks ago, the omikron variant still accounted for 0.3 percent of all corona infections.
“The numbers will go through the roof,” says Emmanuel André. ‘During the first waves, our eyes were focused on the occupancy rate of the beds in intensive care. Thanks to the vaccines, fewer infected people need acute care, but this wave of omikron-related infections is therefore likely to overload primary care in particular.’
