In an exciting competition at the Veterans World Wrestling Championships in Porec, Croatia, the coach of SG Frischauf Fulda, Omid Safawi, won the title in category C up to 70 kg freestyle. On his way to the title, Safawi defeated two wrestlers from Kazakhstan and two from Russia.

Fulda/Porec – The competition started promisingly for the 47-year-old trainer, who is characterized by his tactical finesse and athletic skills. His first two opponents from Kazakhstan and Russia were quickly overwhelmed, with Safawi particularly shining with his explosive speed and precise technique.

In the decisive semi-final, Safawi faced a strong Russian athlete. In a nerve-wracking duel, the Frischauf coach not only demonstrated his physical strength, but also his strategic acumen, which secured him a place in the final.

The final was a spectacle in which Safawi once again had to compete against a Kazakh wrestler who knocked the reigning world champion from Iran out of the race for gold at this World Championships with a shoulder victory. In a hard-fought match, Safawi finally prevailed and secured the title.

“It’s been a long road but the hard work and training has paid off. I am overjoyed to have won this title for my family, my country and my team,” said Safawi after his triumph.

Safawi has already won bronze twice at the Veterans World Championships in Greece

With this victory, Safawi not only demonstrated his skills as a wrestler, but also as a coach who always serves as a role model for his protégés. Especially since Safawi had already returned from the World Championships in Greece last year with two bronze medals. Two other Frischauf wrestlers even won gold there.

“His successes are an inspiration for many young athletes and show that dedication and determination in sport are ultimately rewarded,” says Dschamal Veliev, head of the wrestling department at Frischauf Fulda. (the)
