Omicron wave in China: lockdown again in Shanghai

As of: 06/10/2022 9:32 p.m

Only less than two weeks ago, Shanghai relaxed the corona requirements for most residents. But now the measures are being tightened again. From Saturday there will be curfews and mass tests again.

The authorities in Shanghai tightened the reins again shortly after the end of the lockdown: 15 of the 16 districts announced tests for their around 23 million inhabitants from Saturday after new cases of infection. In addition, until all tests have been carried out, a lockdown applies in six of them. People are then no longer allowed to go outside or can only move around in their neighborhood to a limited extent.

Around eight of Shanghai’s 26 million residents are affected by the curfew. Initially, the strict measures were only announced for the Minhang district. The affected districts will be placed under “closed management” for the test period, according to the Chinese state newspaper “Global Times”. After the mass testing is complete, neighborhoods where positive cases have been found are then usually cordoned off for an extended period of time.

Strict “Null-Covid Strategy”

After two months, the economic and financial center of Shanghai lifted its controversial and sometimes chaotic lockdown last Wednesday, which had led to the interruption of supply chains and was also felt in Germany.

The curfews for the 26 million residents have largely been lifted, although some neighborhoods remained under lockdown or were closed again after the emergence of new corona cases. However, most shops were open. Public and private transport was also allowed again. China has been pursuing a strict “zero Covid strategy” since the beginning of the corona pandemic. With the advent of the omicron variant, however, there were large outbreaks.
