Omicron wave: Corona wave is reaching the elderly in MV again

The corona variant Omikron spread for a long time, especially in schools and daycare centers. In the meantime, the incidence among the elderly is also increasing significantly again.

The corona data that the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania published for Sunday contains several good messages: no new deaths, comparatively few infections and stable utilization in the clinics. Apart from these snapshots, however, it is also confirmed that the so-called omicron wave of the virus is accelerating again.

Omicron wave accelerates again

A good 1,400 new infections were reported on Sunday – even a little fewer than a week ago. In a weekly comparison, however, the numbers look very different. With almost 30,000 infections, a record value was reached for MV. In the weeks before, this number was in the range between 22,000 and 23,000. This means that the spread of the infection is back at the pace it was in January – even though only a few rules have been relaxed so far. In the meantime, however, the effect of many booster vaccinations from the November and December campaign is likely to wear off again.

Nursing staff in quarantine

The high number of infections continues to have little effect on the occupancy of hospital beds. The clinics in the country reported 625 corona-positive patients on Sunday, 81 patients were treated in the intensive care units. There are more problems with staff sick leave. University medicine recently said that around one in five employees was in quarantine themselves or had to take over childcare due to an infection in the family.

Seniors more affected again

For weeks, the focus of the Omikron wave has primarily been on children and young people. The incidence in the younger age groups is still significantly higher. Severe cases are the absolute exception here. But recently the infection in so-called risk groups has accelerated again. In the past week, around 1,250 infections in people over the age of 80 were registered. The incidence in this age group has increased by almost 50 percent in recent weeks. However: In this age group, the rate of vaccinated is particularly high. While the protection against infections decreases significantly after a few weeks, the protection against severe corona courses should last much longer.
