The South African strain of Omicron has features and characteristics that differ from previous COVID-19 variants. Sleep paralysis may be one of the indications that a person has become infected with it.
Such an atypical and at the same time alarming “night symptom” of a new strain of coronavirus was indicated by the British National Health Service (NHS). As reported The Mirror, in the country, Omicron has already become dominant and the close attention of scientists is riveted on him.
“Sleep paralysis is when you can’t move or speak when you wake up or fall asleep. It can be scary, but safe, and most people only deal with it once or twice in their life,” the NHS said.
They emphasized that even such innocent symptoms are frightening, because with them a person cannot move, speak or open his eyes. He may also feel as if someone else is in the room or someone is pushing him. This condition usually lasts for a few minutes.
Scientists stressed that it is currently not known exactly why sleep paralysis occurs or may be more likely in case of infection with COVID-19, namely the Omicron strain. At the same time, they suggest that the cause may lie in the stress, anxiety, PTSD, narcolepsy, or insomnia that people suffer.
“This can only occur as a result of disturbed sleep patterns. Coronavirus disease is a time of heightened stress and there is speculation that it can spread in families,” the message said.
Sleep therapy expert Kat Lederle also expressed his belief that the increased incidence of sleep paralysis is related to the stress caused by the large changes in society due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The way we live today, the insecurity and anxiety we face, among other things, affect our sleep system,” he explained.
At the same time, British experts add that many infected with the Omicron strain indicated another strange “night” symptom. According to the patients, excessive sweating became a real problem for them. People admitted that they woke up covered in sweat, as if they had experienced a particularly bad dream.
As OBOZREVATEL reported earlier, a study by British scientists revealed such atypical symptom of COVID-19, like loss of appetite… It became characteristic precisely for those infected with the Omicron variant.
