MEXICO CITY (apro) .- The worsening of the health situation in Great Britain as the omicron variant spread, affected the number of postponed games in the Premier League, which increased to five in a week after the postponement on Thursday of another pair of encounters.
A series of cases in Leicester caused his game against Tottenham to be postponed just hours before his kickoff. The same as in Manchester United, since Saturday’s away game against Brighton cannot be played.
Several covid19 cases in Brentford prevented him from welcoming United on Tuesday, while the Brighton-Tottenham and Burnley-Watford clashes were also postponed.
The last two postponed games were announced after Brentford coach Thomas Frank had requested a postponement of the weekend’s day so that clubs can deal with the coronavirus outbreaks.
In the middle of a press conference Thursday, prior to Brentford’s visit to Southampton on Saturday, Frank received notification of four additional cases of coronavirus on campus and staff. This brought the number of cases to 13.
Daunted by an outbreak in its own ranks, a previous request by Leicester to postpone its match against Tottenham had been rejected by the Premier League.
But the English league said on Thursday that Leicester had been left with an “insufficient number of available players” after new COVID-19 infections were confirmed in the staff and player roster. Its training facilities were closed to contain the outbreak.
“The Premier League understands that this decision will disappoint and frustrate the fans who were scheduled to attend the game tonight and apologize for the inconvenience and sudden disruption caused,” said the sports institution.
