Scientists have determined that antibodies from the Pfizer vaccine may be 40 times less effective against the Omicron coronavirus than the original COVID-19.
“While its (Omicron coronavirus – ed.) Ability to elude vaccine antibodies is significant, it is incomplete, and this is good news,” said Professor Alex Sigal, a virologist at the African Health Research Institute, who directed the study.
The study showed that the antibodies of people who were vaccinated or had the coronavirus and received antibodies naturally were significantly more effective against Omicron. This suggests that boosters can provide significant benefits.
“Its ability to elude the vaccine was 5-10 times better than the Beta variant,” it said.
Professor Segal also believes that Ommicron probably has both immune defenses and transmission advantages over other options.
However, it is noted that the study is not complete. It studied the live virus “Omicron”, grown in a laboratory, which was tested on blood samples from a total of 12 vaccinated people. Therefore, the study is not can tell us a lot about how effective vaccines will be against preventing infection or further transmission of the virus in the real world.
