Omicron – BA.2 variant: “If you are with someone in a room who has the virus, you will have it”, warns the WHO

Dorit Nitzan is the European Health Emergencies Coordinator for the World Health Organization. This week, in the columns of the Jerusalem Postshe delivered a very practical version of the turn the Covid-19 epidemic is taking.

In the sights of the WHO, Omicronof course, and above all BA.2this sub-variant which is becoming dominant in particular in Denmark, the United Kingdom, India and South Africa: certainly more contagious than the original strain of Omicron (30 to 34%) but also less dangerous.

“The expected trajectory is that BA.2 will become the new dominant variant, because once it crosses a certain threshold, it becomes dominant – as we see in Denmark and the UK”, develops Dorit Nitzan. For her, the risk of réinfection doesn’t seem real, the two strains not being different enough. Although this thesis has not yet been verified.

Other variants in places that don’t have access to the vaccine?

“BA.2 moves from person to person much faster”she explained. “If you are with someone in a room who has the virus, you will have it. The moment you take off your mask to eat and drink, you never know when, but you will have it. We can see it at the Denmark, it moves so fast”.

“What we’ll probably see in Europe is that most of the mutations and changes in the virus will happen in the Omicron tree now, but in the meantime, right under our noses in Africa and other places that don’t have no access to vaccines, we could have totally different variants that are developing right now.”she said. “I think Omicron is not the mega problem right now. We need to focus on licensing and ensuring access to vaccines in other parts of the world.”

#Omicron subvariant BA.2 will likely become dominant worldwide, according to WHO’s regional emergency director. Dr Dorit Nitzan said BA.2 won’t fade away. “The expected trajectory is that it will become the new dominant variant,” Nitzan said citing Denmark https://t.co/jSIJjxB6ms pic.twitter.com/XXAwSaVony
