Pole melting is a warning for the increase in the earth’s temperature. One of the effects reef can disappear.
Greenhouse effect continues to happen and the earth is getting more and more worrying. Peter Thomson, special envoy United Nations for Oceans and the Co -Chair of Friends of Ocean Action, also called for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
“You can’t have a healthy planet without healthy oceans,” Thomson said World Economic Forum.
Thomson pointedly said that the big emitters had to face the fact that they were poisoning the earth. So they have to lead a drastic reduction in emissions.
An example is Fiji. Hailing from Fiji, Thomson revealed that Fiji already under threat of rising sea levels and sea temperatures.
“From an ocean perspective, everything is connected. Think of it as one bathtub. So what flows from the Greenland ice sheet causes sea levels to rise in the atoll republic,” he explains.
The United Nations does report major changes taking place in the oceans. These include warming, more frequent ocean heat waves, acidification and decreased oxygen levels. Widespread assessments of human impact on the planet say that climate change is widespread, rapid and intensifying.
“Warming, acidification, deoxygenation, changing circulation patterns and rising sea levels threaten marine life and ecosystems and jeopardize the future ability of the oceans to indirectly support life on earth,” said Thomson.
This clearly threatens marine ecosystems, including coral reefs. Reef is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. Coral reefs are also home to more than a quarter of marine life.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says that reef will decrease by 70-90 percent with global warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius. In fact, all coral reefs will disappear with just a 2 degree Celsius increase.
This is certainly very difficult to achieve in decades. Except for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions that is carried out quickly and on a large scale.
“Government leaders must step in. Government action is needed to make renewable energy our way forward. Focusing on innovation in new models for restoration, protection and financing of oceans and ecosystems is the recommended way,” he said.
