C‘is distributed ! The most famous regatta in the world is entering its final phase. It is the Italian challenge Luna Rossa who, after getting rid of the other challengers, will face the defender, Team New Zealand. The first boat to win seven rounds in Auckland waters will win the trophy.
Flying machine regatta chronograph
If we keep in mind the games of the past between giant, slow and majestic monohulls, the last two editions were fought on board catamarans, veritable dragsters of the seas. This year, we are back to 23-meter long monohulls. But the foils with which they are equipped allow them to rise above the waves and reach crazy speeds, of the order of 50 knots (nearly 93 km / h). Prohibition for crews of eleven men to make the slightest error on pain of immediate capsizing.
Team New Zealand skipper Glenn Ashby talks about his baptized boat The Rehutai (meaning in Maori language “force and energy of the oceans”) like a flying machine. But it is indeed a watch dedicated to the marine element that Omega, team partner and, moreover, official timekeeper of the America’s Cup, has designed to celebrate this 36e edition of the test.
The sea on your wrist
This new chronograph bearing the name “Seamaster Diver 300M America’s Cup” features a 44mm diameter stainless steel case. Everything about it “breathes” its nautical ancestry: blue ceramic dial decorated with laser-engraved waves, bezel of the same color, but bearing numbers and indexes in white enamel, water resistance to 300 meters and countdown function using a graduated red aluminum ring and at an aperture indicating the hours and minutes preceding the start of each heat. Even the pushers (in two different shades) participate in this momentum by having a “soft touch” rubber coating which ensures optimal handling, even in the spray. The Chrono Lock locking device has been installed with the objective of controlling the use of the chronograph function.
Aesthetic reminder linked to the world of racing, the small hands appearing on the additional counters display the silhouette of boat hulls. The central red seconds hand carries a counterweight representing the famous silver ewer symbolizing the America’s Cup.
A signature engraved on the back
The sporty character of the watch is confirmed by the presence at the heart of the case of the Omega Master Chronometer Co-Axial 9900 caliber automatic movement. The oscillating weight can be observed through a transparent caseback and the double signature “36th America’s Cup” can be seen. and “Auckland 2021”. Finally, to wear this racing beast on the wrist, its designers have opted for two easily interchangeable straps with one click, one in steel, the other in rubber. Navy blue, of course.
Appointment on March 10 (except postponement due to the health crisis) for the first round of this duel at the top between sea-sea missiles.
