Ombudsman Maya Manolova presented the first mobile ramp for people with disabilities in the capital metro – 2024-08-22 09:55:36

/View info/ On phone 02/ 921 21 00, citizens with reduced mobility will declare their trip

From today, people with wheelchairs will be able to use the metropolitan metro independently, after the initiative of the Ombudsman Maya Manolova and with the assistance of “Metropolitan” EAD and the Metropolitan Municipality, a mobile ramp was provided. Thus, the hitherto insurmountable distance between the carriages and the platform will now be overcome by people with reduced mobility. To do this, they will have to make a request one hour before their trip by calling – 02/ 921 21 00. A specially appointed employee will assist in setting up and raising the ramp.

“With a small effort, thanks to the good will of the executive director of “Metropolitan” EAD, Mr. Stoyan Bratoev, and the Municipality of Stolichna, we solved a big problem for people with disabilities who are in wheelchairs,” said Ombudsman Maya Manolova at the Metro Station “Serdica II” at the presentation of the first mobile ramp.

The presentation was also attended by the deputy mayor of Sofia Municipality Albena Atanasova, the executive director of “Metropolitan” EAD Stoyan Bratoev and the executive director of the Institute for Modern Politics Petar Kichashki, on whose idea and with the media partnership of “Offnews” the project was realized.

“The next cause that we set ourselves with the civil organizations of people with disabilities is the churches in the city of Sofia. Some of them are inaccessible due to the presence of stairs in front of the temples themselves. We will create an organization with the socially sensitive business in the capital, if everyone commits to making a similar rap for a church, I think we will solve the problem of access. Then there are the social services and regional town halls, polyclinics, etc. However, the institutions must categorically assume their commitment and responsibility in order to finally solve the problems with the accessible environment”, Manolova also pointed out.

The ombudsman was categorical that it is unacceptable in social services for experts to meet disabled people in front of buildings.

The executive director of “Metropolitan” EAD Stoyan Bratoev pointed out that with the installation of the ramp, the metro is now fully accessible for people with reduced mobility, as it has 305 elevators, which are repaired promptly in case of damage.

Deputy Mayor Albena Atanasova added that the Sofia Municipality is developing a strategy for general accessibility on the territory of the city of Sofia.
