Ombudsman Diana Kovacheva Elected as Bulgarian Judge at the European Court of Human Rights

Ombudsman Diana Kovacheva was elected by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for Bulgarian judge at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). This was announced by the head of the plenary session, BTA reported.

Out of a total of 214 submitted votes and 201 actual votes, Kovacheva won a majority of 115 votes ahead of rivals Galya Valkova (73 votes) and Dragomir Yordanov (13 votes).

Kovacheva receives a nine-year termwhich should start within three months.

In practice, this means that The National Assembly will have to elect a new public defender in place of Kovacheva. Before her, the post was held by Maya Manolova and the late Ginyo Ganev, who was also the first ombudsman of Bulgaria.

Kovacheva is a lawyer and former Minister of Justice V the first government of Boyko Borisov.
