The Cuban singer Omara Portuondo finally received in her hands the Latin Grammy award statuette that she won in 2023, which she was unable to collect during the ceremony.
The singer, who is one of the oldest artists to win the award, at 93 years old, won the category for “Best Traditional Tropical Album” for her album Life.
During the 24th edition of the awards, Portuondo competed with the Cubans Septeto Santiaguero and their album And I keep going; the Faílde Orchestra with the album Danzoneandoand Estrella Acosta with the album Tierra: Songs By Cuban Women.
Through social networks, the artist announced that she had finally received the famous golden gramophone from the winners of the most important musical competition in the industry.
“I already have my Latin Grammy in my hands! Thanks to my son Ariel and my granddaughter Rossio who went to look for him in Mexico. Thank you always to all of you,” he wrote on his Instagram account.
The so-called ‘Bride of Feeling’ explained that it was her son and granddaughter who visited her on the Island and brought her her prize, which they collected during the ceremony last November.
Portuondo thanked the Academy of Music for the recognition, as well as his companions on the album, such as the Guatemalan guitarist Gaby Moreno and the Panamanian singer Rubén Blades.
The Cuban has an extensive career that includes several awards, and in fact, she had held the record of the oldest artist to win the award, after triumphing in the same category at the age of 79 in 2009, with her album Gracias.
However, the title was taken from her in 2022 by fellow Cuban Ángela Álvarez, who won the Latin Grammy in the “Best New Artist” category at age 95.
