Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman has cut the working hours of public and private sector employees during the coming month of Ramadan. Oman’s Ministry of Labor (MOL) announced via X Account on Wednesday, March 6, that the maximum working hours for employees in the private sector will be 6 hours per day or 30 hours per week. In the public sector, official working hours will be from 9 am to 2 pm. At other times different schedules can be arranged if manpower is required. Thus, the Head of Unit has the power to allocate working hours, schedule attendance and grant leave.

Employees may be allowed to work remotely if the nature of the work makes it suitable. But there is a requirement that 50 percent of the total employees should be present at their workplace.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization had issued a circular on Monday, March 4, reducing working hours by two hours during Ramadan, which is also coming to the UAE. It has also been suggested that possible employees should be given the opportunity to choose suitable working hours or telecommuting. In the public sector the official working hours are 9 am to 2.30 pm and on Fridays 9 am to 12 noon. In previous years too, working hours were fixed at six hours a day during the month of fasting.
