The Public Prosecution Service in The Hague starts an investigation into the threat that has been expressed against Geert Wilders in a video. The Public Prosecution said on Monday to have seen the video and to have assessed it as a “criminal threat”.
In the video that went online on Sunday, a man says to the camera: “This is freedom of speech.” Then he points a gun at a picture of Wilders and shoots more than ten times at “Geert Wilders’ cartoon”. The man said to Heart of the Netherlands that he did this to provoke. “I made the video to see the reaction.”
Wilders shared the video Sunday via Twitter with the caption “sick”. The PVV leader reports Monday afternoon according to the OM.
Wilders could already count on support from President of the House of Representatives Khadija Arib on Monday. “Wilders has indicated that he himself wants to report this man; the House of Representatives supports him in this,” says Arib.
She emphasizes that parliamentarians “must be able to do their work in freedom, and not be hindered in any way. It is horrible that Geert Wilders, an elected representative of the people, has been living an unfree life for years due to all the death threats,” writes Arib. Wilders has been protected since 2004, a few days after the murder of Theo van Gogh.
