OM: shooting McDonald’s Zwolle was a double murder, ‘suspect with death threats’ Inland

His lawyer Esther Blok said this on Thursday during a first preliminary session in the criminal case. Veysel . was not there himself, he chose to remain in his cell.

The panic on March 30th was enormous when Veysel Ü. pulled out a firearm out of nowhere and fired eleven bullets at the brothers Ali and Hüseyin Torunlar. It was about 5pm, there had just been a soccer tournament in the area and many families with young children were eating. People ducked under the tables, or tried to find a safe haven.

Amid the havoc in the restaurant, the bodies of the Torunlar brothers were left behind. Ali was hit by six bullets, his brother Hüseyin by five. Veysel . saw a chance to get away in the commotion, but reported to a police station in Deventer at 11 o’clock in the evening. During interrogations he confessed, but he also says that he does not remember anything about the shooting itself.

The prosecutor does not believe in his amnesia. “It’s striking how often people who shoot someone else don’t remember that.” The officer thinks that Veysel Ü. with the story of his faltering memory trying to get away with manslaughter, instead of murder, to get a lesser sentence.

Targeted action

According to the officer, the shooting looks like a targeted action. “All shots hit the mark. Pretty clever for someone who doesn’t remember what he did and says he didn’t intend to shoot.” The Public Prosecution Service is prosecuting Veysel Ü. for a double murder.

The suspect is said to have given one million euros to Ali Torunlar’s son to invest in real estate in Istanbul. However, he did not see a cent back from his investment. Some of the money belonged to others, so the suspect had a major financial problem, the officer says.

Veysel . refuses to answer questions about the origin of the money. The officer thinks it comes from crime. Attorney Esther Blok says there is no indication of this.

Not everything it seems

According to Blok, “not everything is as it seems in this case”. She says that Veysel Ü. by the Torunlar brothers, “has been kept on a leash for a long time. He has been defrauded, extorted and he and his family have received multiple death threats.” Threats that, according to Blok, continue to this day.

The meeting at McDonald’s is said to have been an initiative of the Torunlar brothers, who Veysel Ü. summoned them to come there, according to Blok. This would appear from chats on the telephones examined. The weapon has not been found to this day. The suspect pointed to the place where he would have thrown it, but nothing there for a long time. The officer: “And we searched very well.”

There will be a new introductory session on 1 September. There is no date yet for the substantive treatment.
