From Monday, the Public Prosecution Service will use smart cameras to track drivers who use the phone behind the wheel. These photograph the motorists and send the images to the Central Judicial Collection Agency (CJIB), where it is determined whether there is indeed a violation.
The photos are taken with cameras that hang above the road, with the lens pointing downwards. The face of the driver is not photographed, only the hands and license plate of the car in question. According to the OM, the photos are clear enough to draw a conclusion.
The camera systems are easy to move. “This gives you the feeling that you can be fined for a violation anytime, anywhere,” said the OM.
When someone is fined 240 euros, an appeal can be lodged. The motorist in question may also request the photos in question.
Previously, people who used the phone while driving were put aside by the police. However, that requires a lot of time from agents and the cameras have to be a solution.
The Netherlands is the first European country with such a system
This makes the Netherlands the first European country to use this technology. In Australia this has been the case for some time and according to the OM successfully. The cameras should work day and night and in all weather conditions.
The system has already been tested in the Netherlands, where 400 motorists were caught with a telephone in their hand. Measurements were taken over a non-motorway for 24 hours and over a motorway for 6 hours.
