The New York State Attorney’s Office has joined a criminal investigation into the Trump Organization, part of ex-President Trump’s business empire.
Attorney General Letitia James will be working with prosecutors in Manhattan, who already had a criminal investigation underway against the company. James initially only investigated possible civil law violations. It is being investigated whether the value of real estate has been tampered with in order to obtain loans and tax benefits. The Trump Organization does not yet want to respond to the developments to American media and the public prosecutor also does not want to say more about the investigation.
After a lengthy Supreme Court lawsuit, Cyrus Vance Jr., Manhattan’s most senior prosecutor, obtained Trump’s tax returns and other financial documents in February. During his presidency, he refused to reveal it. Earlier, the former president called the prosecution’s investigations “politically motivated”. An investigation into Trump is also underway in the state of Georgia. It revolves around his efforts to influence the outcome of the presidential election. (NRC)
