On Tuesday, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) demanded thirty years in prison against three men who allegedly shot Ayla Mintjes in May last year. The target was her criminal friend Anis B.. The man was sitting next to the victim when their vehicle was fired on in Amsterdam, but survived the attack.
Exactly one year ago, the 27-year-old woman died of her injuries when the Mercedes she was driving was shot at on May 16. 36 bullets were fired, one of which fatally struck Mintjes.
The shooting incident was the result of a months-long hunt for criminal B. with whom Mintjes had a relationship. The man was told in March 2021 that he was on a death list and Mintjes also knew about that threat.
According to the Public Prosecution Service, Samuel Y. (21), Renato F. (35) and Jeremia T. are responsible for the woman’s death. F. was the driver of a Volkswagen Caddy that delivered gunmen Y. and T. to Mintjes’ home on the Maassluisstraat in Amsterdam on the fatal day.
Suspects suffered burns
After firing the bullets, one of which was found in an apartment 800 meters away, the men fled in the Caddy. This car was set on fire a little further in Amsterdam.
All three men had burns when they were arrested. This is consistent with the statements of witnesses, who saw the persons on fire after setting the Caddy on fire.
Footage also shown in court shows a man’s legs on fire and an icy scream can be heard. These injuries correspond to those of Y. On the day of the murder, he was found seriously injured in an apartment in Utrecht, while the room had a strong smell of petrol.
DNA of the other two suspects was also found on a wad of tissues and a cap, found next to the Caddy. The alternative scenarios outlined by F. and T. were brushed aside by the Public Prosecution Service as completely implausible. Y. has always remained silent.
“Ayla was an unintended target. Her love for Anis B. has become fatal for her,” said one of the prosecutors. “Her boyfriend will have to live with the idea that the bullets were meant for him.”
