OM demands 12 years and TBS for sawing body into pieces | Inland

On February 17, 2018, the police discovered three plastic bags containing body parts in the crawl space under De G.’s home in Zwolle. It quickly became clear that the body of 37-year-old Deniz, who had been missing for days, had been found. De G. had helped the family find it, while he was busy trying to find the body. In October 2019, 43-year-old De G. was sentenced to 12 years in prison and TBS for killing Deniz and mutilating his body.

The way in which De G. dealt with Deniz’s body “is horrific, degrading and beyond all imagination. He acted cold-blooded and calculated,” said the solicitor-general. De G. only appealed against the conviction for manslaughter. His lawyer Anno Huisman argued that it was suicide. “Shooting someone in your own home is not likely in itself.” The chance of being caught is very high.

Initially, the Public Prosecution Service also saw insufficient evidence of manslaughter, but an expert report, drawn up at the behest of the next of kin, concluded that suicide is much less likely. The court saw important evidence for manslaughter in 2019 in the discovery of a tiny piece of sheet metal in the victim’s head. Trash cans and cookie jars, for example, are made of this material. Deniz may have held a metal object in front of his head to fend off, something that doesn’t fit the suspect’s story.

But De G. works professionally with galvanized sheet steel, Huisman said. It may already have been in the weapon and the house has not been searched for more metal particles. Also, the gun went off at a greater distance from the head than normal suicide. According to the lawyer, this does not rule out that the gun went off in a struggle when his client wanted to stop Deniz from committing suicide. In doing so, he pulled Deniz’s arm toward him.

The court’s decision is due in December.
