OM: Apple Store hostage taker died of injuries

Last night, a 27-year-old gunman from Amsterdam held a Bulgarian, probably an Apple Store customer, at gunpoint for hours. The hostage-taker threatened to blow himself up and demanded 200 million in cryptocurrencies and a safe passage from the property.

About 70 people hiding in the building were taken to safety by the police during and after the hostage crisis. Four of them had been hiding in a closet. Victim support was also offered to all these people immediately afterwards.

Hostage taker hit by police car

The hostage situation ended around 10:30 PM after the hostage man managed to run away and the hostage-taker went after him. The suspect was hit by a police car outside, as can be seen in the images below:


Weapons and explosives

He was then taken to hospital with serious injuries. The man was found to be carrying a handgun, semi-automatic weapon and explosives on his body. The explosives were not on alert, the Amsterdam triangle reported.

The motive of the hostage taker is not yet known. The hostage-taker appeared to have a criminal record in connection with the Weapons and Ammunition Act. It is not known whether he was known to the GGZ.


‘Confused behavior’

According to Het Parool, the hostage taker is Abdel Rahman A. According to the newspaper, he regularly displays confused and threatening behavior.

The police previously reported that the hostage-taker had previously been in contact with the police and the judiciary, including for possession of weapons. According to Het Parool A.’s last conviction was in May last year.

He was then given 60 hours of community service, 1 month’s probation and a contact ban of 3 years for assaulting his ex-girlfriend. The newspaper also writes on the basis of sources that A. regularly showed confused and threatening behavior.
