Olympics: Saint Lucia of 180,000 inhabitants celebrates first medal – Wild celebrations (Videos) – 2024-08-04 09:35:34

Tucked away in the eastern Caribbean, between Martinique and Saint Vincent, Saint Lucia of 616 sq.km. and its 180,000 inhabitants has been celebrating its first medal in the Olympic Games since yesterday.

The 23-year-old runner Julien Alfred made the big surprise and finished first in the 100m race. women’s, even defeating the big favorite, Sha’ Kari Richardson.

Images of the wild celebrations from the capital Castries have made the rounds on the internet. A large crowd watched Alfred’s race on a giant screen and when she cut the thread first, wild celebrations ensued.

Saint Lucia first participated in the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. Seventeen years earlier, in February 1979, it became an independent state, choosing to remain in the British Commonwealth.
