Taiwan has so far won two silver and three bronze medals in Japan. The bronze holder from the previous Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in the category up to 58 kg Kchuo Hsingchun today secured gold with a performance of 103 kg in the market and 133 in a throw.
Kchuo Hsingchun also holds world records in the market (110 kg), pitch (140 kg) and doubles (247 kg). She added the Olympic medal to four world champion titles. “I have all the pieces together now. I’m happy,” she said.
Polina Gurjevová from Turkmenistan and Mikiko Andohová from Japan finished behind her. Gurjev presented herself with a total of 217 kg (96 + 121) and won the first ever medal in the history of the Olympic Games for Turkmenistan. “I think I’ve entered the history of Turkmenistan. I’m in shock,” said the weightlifter, who described the winner of the race as her role model. Andoh won bronze for 214 kg (94 + 120).
Charron earned the gold medal in her first Olympic participation with a performance of 105 kg in the market and 131 kg in the pitch. She was followed by Italian Giorgia Bordignon with 232 kg (104 + 128) and Taiwanese representative Chen Wenhui with 230 kg (103 + 127).
