Track cyclists in Dutch record to third time in qualifying

sport">9.25am: Dutch track cyclists Laurine van Riessen and Shanne Braspennincx set the third fastest time in the qualification of the team sprint at the Olympic Games with a new Dutch record. The duo came to a time of 32.465 seconds. This made them 0.363 seconds slower than Germany’s best time: 32.102.

sport">With their first appearance in the qualifications, Van Riessen and Braspennincx were faster than the time that Braspennincx and Kyra Lamberink set in 2018: 32.958 seconds.

sport">The Netherlands will face Poland in the first round of the team sprint. In the first round, the fastest of the eight teams from the qualifiers will compete against the slowest and so will the numbers 2 to 7. The two winning teams with the best times will compete for the gold and the other two winning teams from the first lap for the bronze.

Medal race sailors Duetz and Bekkering postponed until Tuesday

sport">7:37 AM: The sailors Annette Duetz and Annemiek Bekkering have to be patient for one day longer. Their 49erFX medal race at the Olympics has been postponed until tomorrow due to the virtual lack of wind. Duetz and Bekkering will start the battle for the medals on Tuesday with as many points as the Brazilian title defenders Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze. The race was actually supposed to start at 7:33 AM.

sport">Duetz and Bekkering had already changed and were about to head for the start when the decision was made. “A good decision,” Bekkering judged. “The forecasts for tomorrow are perfect: no showers, a lot sunnier and a good sea breeze. We can now make a good race plan for that again. With these circumstances it would be more luck than wisdom.”

sport">“On the other hand, it is also a shame,” said Duetz. “It’s a super exciting day and we were ready for it.” The two-time world champions then returned to their hotel. “We’re going to play some games, have a table tennis table and can also cycle a bit,” Duetz described the rest of the day.

Rower Florijn also leaves Tokyo quarantine hotel

sport">07.16 am: Rower Finn Florijn has left the quarantine hotel in Tokyo and is flying back to the Netherlands. The 21-year-old skiffer has been quarantined for ten days. Florijn tested positive for the corona virus on Friday 23 July.

sport">The son of former Olympic champion Ronald Florijn had competed in the skiff heats earlier that day and qualified for the repechage. After his positive test result, however, the Olympic Games were immediately over for Florijn. He had to stay for ten days in a specially designated hotel, where all participants in the Games who test positive for the corona virus will be taken.

sport">After skateboarder Candy Jacobs, taekwondoka Reshmie Oogink and an anonymous staff member of the rowing team, Florijn was the fourth Dutchman to enter the quarantine hotel. They have been allowed to return home for the past few days. Only tennis player Jean-Julien Rojer, head coach Josy Verdonkschot of the women’s rowing boats and his assistant Isabelle Jacobs are now stuck in Tokyo after their positive corona tests.

sport">In principle, they all have to stay in the quarantine hotel for ten days. They can go home earlier if they test negative on days 6 and 7 of their stay.

Greek athlete Tentoglou wins men’s long jump

sport">05.40 am: Greek athlete Miltiadis Tentoglou has won Olympic gold in the men’s long jump. The 23-year-old Greek entered the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo on his last attempt at a jump of 8.41 meters.

sport">Cuban Juan Miguel Echevarria took the silver. Echevarria also reached 8.41 meters, but his second best jump was slightly less good than Tentoglou’s (8.15 at 8.09). The bronze medal in the long jump also went to a Cuban, Maykel Masso. He came to 8.21 meters.

sport">World champion Tajay Gayle from Jamaica recorded only one valid jump and came to 7.69 meters. Gayle was injured earlier in the tournament and appeared with a taped left knee.

Argentine hockey players at the expense of Germany to the semi-finals

She finished with a point total of 15,200. The Russian Anastasia Ilyankova (14,833) won silver and the bronze went to the American Sunisa Lee (14,500).

sport">Derwael (21) worked for years towards the Games in Japan and really aimed for gold in Tokyo. “I am very happy, I have no words for it. The Brabançonne was a magical moment,” she referred to the Belgian national anthem. “It was a long preparation, a long week and a very long day, but I tried to stay as calm as possible. I told myself that I trained hard enough and that I should enjoy it. However, it is a pity that my family could not be here.”

sport">Belgium is now in Tokyo on three medals: once gold, once silver and once bronze.
