Chris Burton wins the silver medal at the Olympics. Afterwards, the Australian just wants a beer. But he is initially denied this.

Paris – It is the highlight for athletes: the Olympics. Four years of blood, sweat and tears should pay off – and ideally with a medal. The dams break when the big goal is finally achieved. The German Oliver Zeidler was also overcome with emotion after his triumph.

Olympic medalist has to endure interview marathon

For many athletes, however, the work only really begins afterwards. Interviews, press conferences, award ceremonies. The after-program of a medal winner at the Olympics is pretty jam-packed.

This was also the case for Australian event rider Chris Burton. The 43-year-old took silver behind German Michael Jung and then just wanted to celebrate. But not with the Australian press.

Olympic medalist is not really interested in interviews

When the Australian was asked in an interview whether he had already had a beer to celebrate his triumph, Burton really let loose. “I’m glad you asked that. I was basically taken away and had to give a urine sample. I was dragged from press conference to press conference to listen to the same stupid questions over and over again,” the Australian said of his less than fun activities after winning the silver medal.

“Actually, I just want to see my friends, colleagues, wife and family and have a beer with them,” Burton leaves no doubt as to how much he is looking forward to the interview.

Olympic medalist has advice for funny interviews

The Australian doesn’t even understand the timing of the interview. “I’m a little surprised you don’t want to do these interviews tomorrow. Because we usually show up completely hungover and they’re the best interviews you could ever get,” explains Burton, adding: “I don’t know why you want to hear from a sober event rider.”

In the end, Burton probably got through the interview marathon and had time for his well-earned beer. And was perhaps also quite happy not to have to speak to the press the next day … (kk)
