Olympic gymnastics title for the USA – 2024-07-30 20:14:33

Simone Biles led the United States to the Olympic women’s gymnastics team title at the Paris Games.

The American struggled with mental health in Tokyo, but the 27-year-old has returned to the sport and is dominating again.

Biles won the fifth Olympic gold of her career. Along with teammates Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, Hazley Rivera, and Tokyo 2020 all-around champion Sunissa Lee, they completely dominated and amassed 171.296 points.

Italy took silver with 165.494 points in its first Olympic team gymnastics medal since 1928, while Brazil took bronze for its first medal in the event.

It’s the fourth Olympic team gold overall for the U.S. and third in the last four games. At the Games in Tokyo, the American women remained behind the Russian team, which did not participate in Paris.

A top score of 14.900 on vault in the first of four rotations reassured Biles after mental health issues left her without gold in Tokyo three years ago.

The American gymnasts took the lead from the first apparatus. Biles looked steady on the mixed parallel bars, confident on the beam and incredible on the floor as tennis great Serena Williams watched from the stands.

Simone Biles had calf problems and her ankle was bandaged during qualifying. But this time, she looked all set and is aiming for four more gold medals in the individual events, starting Thursday with the all-around final.
