In January, Russian 2006 Olympic ice dance gold medalist Roman Kostomarov performed in minus 20 degrees at an ice show in Russia. After the performance, on January 10, Kostomarov contracted pneumonia and was taken to a hospital in the Moscow area where he was treated on a ventilator and placed in a coma. His condition was described as “extremely serious”.
It wasn’t until three weeks later that the 46-year-old was awakened from the coma, but then came the next setback. He had suffered necrosis, a type of tissue death, as a result of sepsis and fingers had to be amputated.
Still in serious condition
Now the news agency writes Reuters, citing Russian Izvestia, that Kostomarov also had a foot amputated. In addition, the heel and toes of the other foot have been removed.
The Olympic gold medalist’s condition is still described as serious.
It has been reported that Kostomarov will be flown to a hospital in Germany for his rehabilitation.
Roman Kostomarov has won Olympic gold, two WC gold and three EC gold in ice dance.
