Olympic gold after bizarre denouement for Naarden sailor Odile van Aanholt

The weather conditions in Marseille have been variable throughout the Olympic Games. The medal race was initially supposed to be sailed yesterday, but the wind was not strong enough. The Netherlands entered the medal race as second and had Sweden and Norway as their biggest challengers.

After the first turning point, Van Aanholt and Duetz were in a good position. Together with Norway, they were the first to come through the bend. The Netherlands was also in the lead at the lower mark. The wind dropped a little, which made sailing more difficult. Nevertheless, they went in a straight line to the finish. Or so it seemed, because the finish line turned out to be a little further away. The Netherlands turned around again and crossed the line in third place.
