Slovak speed canoeist Peter Gelle advanced to the semifinals of the K1 discipline at 1000 m at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. The remaining four kayakers may be surprised, but they will have to go to their limits.

We can probably say that Peter Gelle caught a harder semifinal and probably just advancing to the A final will be extremely valuable. Among the big favorites of the first semifinal race is the Czech kayaker Jozef Dostál, who defends the silver from Rio and yesterday showed the fastest time in the first race, which no one has beaten. Jacob Schopf from Germany and Bálint Kopász from Hungary, who also showed better performances than Gelle in the heats, will not want to miss the procedure either. The chance for the Slovak national team is probably just to fight for the last place, which Zhang Dong, Bojan Zdelar, Artuur Peters and Etienne Hubert will also want to win. It will probably be tight and balanced until the end, but Peter Gelle is definitely not without a chance.

A native of Nové Zámky, who is already 36 years old, he will present himself in the first semifinal race together with seven opponents, with whom he will fight for four seats in the A final. The eight losers will meet in the B final, which will determine the final ranking.

The Olympic Games in Tokyo have already moved to the second half and Slovakia is gradually missing opportunities to win the fourth medal after the gold of Zuzana Rehák Štefečeková and two silver men Jakub Grigar and Rory Sabbatini. Today we will be watching the K1 semi-final and final races for 1000 meters in speed canoeing and we will keep our fingers crossed for Peter Gelle to improve his eighth place from Rio and maybe even get on the podium, which would mean a fantastic medal. It would be a small miracle from his point of view, because he overcame the coronavirus before the Tokyo Olympics, which marked his preparation, and when we add to that the excellent competition in this discipline, the medal ambition seems quite unlikely. It’s still a sport and having a dream always pays off because there is a better chance that it will come true.
