Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the grabbing of a placard held by a spectator during a badminton match at the Paris Olympics, which read “Taiwan go for it”, by another spectator at the badminton venue at the Paris Olympics during the games on Friday.,
A video was posted on social media showing a man forcibly grabbing her green placard and then the man being dragged out of the stadium by security men.
Two Reuters reporters saw the spectator walk away, shouting, as the Taiwanese athlete played.
Taiwan is competing in the Olympics as Chinese Taipei to avoid objections from China, which claims the democratically-ruled island as its own territory.
Green, the color of Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party, is used by people who support Taiwan’s separate identity from China and, often, independence for the island nation.
In a statement on Saturday, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned “the crude and cunning means by malicious people to arbitrarily seize the slogan ‘Taiwan Let’s Go For It'” from our country’s national during the Olympics.
“This brutal act seriously violates the spirit of the culture that the Olympic Games represent, and is even more contrary to the rule of law and violates freedom of expression.”
The island’s de facto ambassador to France, François Wu, had reported the incident to the local police.
Wu posted a photo of himself with the spectator whose banner was destroyed on Facebook saying, “Thank you to the students who worked hard to cheer on our badminton heroes! Come to Taiwan!”
The foreign ministry statement said other fans holding banners with the word “Taiwan” were removed from the venue by security.
