Olympic Games 2024. These Countries Have Never Succeeded
The lack of an Olympic medal is a situation that a surprisingly large number of countries in the world find themselves in. Some might think that much depends on the size of the country. However, the situation is quite different, and a good example is Bangladesh, which has a population of 170 million. The third most populous country in the world has never won a medal in the history of the Olympic Games.
The reason is the difficult economic and socio-political situation of the country. Bengali athletes often did not qualify for the main competitions, and participation in the games was guaranteed to them by wild cards, awarded by the IOC.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is in a similar situation, despite having 100 million inhabitants, sending five representatives to the Olympic Games with little chance of winning a medal. African countries such as Myanmar, Angola and Nepal are in a similar situation.
Countries like Cambodia, South Sudan, Bolivia, Chad, Malawi and Guinea are in less than favorable circumstances in 2024. Their teams have never won a medal in previous years, and this year’s games will probably not be the ones that will go down in history for these countries.
Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Which European countries have never won a medal?
However, you don’t have to look far to find countries that have never won an Olympic medal in their history. In Europe, as many as five countries have never had a chance to stand on the podium. Until recently, there were more. However, in 2016, Kosovo made its debut, and its athletes showed extraordinary effectiveness. They already managed to win their first gold thanks to judoka Majlinda Kelmendi. In Tokyo, the team won two more gold medals in this discipline as well.
Unfortunately, Kosovo’s neighbor Albania was not so lucky. Their athletes have been in the top many times in history, but none of them won a medal. Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has been competing in the Olympic Games since 1992, still remains without any victories.
Other European countries that have not managed to stand on the podium in the history of the games are Andorra, Malta and Monaco, i.e. small countries with a small number of competitors. Andorra’s team has two athletes competing in two disciplines – athletics and whitewater kayaking. Malta, on the other hand, has five representatives, who take part in disciplines such as judo, athletics, swimming and shooting. Monaco has the largest representation of these three countries – it has six competitors, who try their hand at judo, athletics, swimming, table tennis and rowing.
The Games will last until August 11, and there will probably be many more surprises for athletes and spectators. If you are interested in which countries will stand on the podium, be sure to check out our coverage in sport.interia.pl.
