The two-time world champion American athlete himself announced on Thursday that he will rejoin the United States team, six years after his last pentathlon and five years after his retirement.
The downhill specialist, who celebrated his 40th birthday in October, collected three Olympic medals during his career: in 2010 he won gold in downhill and bronze in super-giant slalom, and in 2018 in PyeongChang he was also third in downhill. She won a total of eight medals at the World Championships, and her 82 World Cup race victories were for a long time a record in the women’s discipline, and her compatriot Mikaela Shiffrin broke this record last January. Shiffrin is still active and has already won 97 WC races, which is an absolute record in the sport.
Vonn last competed in February 2019. His career was hampered several times by injuries, including broken arms and legs, torn knee ligaments, and loss of consciousness.
The United States Athletic Association said Thursday that the athlete has been training continuously in recent months.
“Getting back to being able to ski without pain has been an amazing journey. I want to share my knowledge of the sport with the amazing women on the US team,” she stated Vonn. For now, it is not possible to know exactly which races he wants to start.
The next Winter Olympics will be held in 2026 in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
