The German team won two silver and two bronze medals at the Olympic Games in Paris on Saturday. The balance could be improved a little on the final day, as there are certainly a few opportunities in the 13 decisions that will be made before the closing ceremony in the evening.
Let’s start again with the athletics and the women’s marathon (8:00 a.m.). The three Germans Melat Kejeta, Laura Hottenrott and Domenika Mayer are taking part. They are not among the favorites, but world record holder Tigst Assefa and Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir are.
Im Cycling Track cycling sprinter Lea Sophie Friedrich has good prospects of winning her second medal in Paris after winning bronze in the team sprint. In the qualification, the Cottbus native set a world record of 10.029 seconds over 200 meters. Now the semifinals are next (11.22 a.m.), before the medals are awarded in the final (12.45 p.m.). Emma Hinze, meanwhile, was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
The Germans are in Handball back among the world’s elite. They have already secured silver, but can still crown themselves the first Olympic victory since 1980 in the final (1:30 p.m.) in Lille against world champions Denmark. 44 years ago, the GDR won gold in Moscow. Spain and Slovenia will play for third place (9:00 a.m.).
The Stade de France will host the closing party (9 p.m.). As at the opening, there will be a parade – but not on boats on the Seine, but traditionally in the stadium. Then the Olympic flame will be extinguished. The German flag will be carried by triathlete Laura Lindemann and canoeist Max Rendschmidt, who won gold. According to media reports, Hollywood actor Tom Cruise and the French bands Air and Phoenix will be part of the show.
