Federer announced shortly after Wimbledon that he had suffered a setback in his knee and therefore could not compete in the Olympic Games.
Federer is said to have informed colleague Belinda Bencic about this in a phone call.
The two tennis professionals are considered good friends. Federer’s joy on Instagram is all the more understandable, especially since both won the Hopman Cup 2019 together.

So Bencic competed in singles and women’s doubles instead of singles and mixed competitions – and won a sensational gold.
“History” is exactly the right keyword – because Bencic is also in the final of Tokyo with double colleague Viktorija Golubic, so he has already secured another medal.
This makes her the only person from Switzerland to win two medals in one Olympic year.
Federer, on the other hand, won gold for Switzerland in 2008, in men’s doubles together with Stan Wawrinka.
He achieved his best individual result in 2012 in London with silver. In the final he lost to Andy Murray. Marc Rosset won the only Swiss gold in men’s singles so far in 1992 in Barcelona.
The decisive moment: Bencic makes Olympic victory perfect
