12-year-old Olivier Backx has had a busy week after showing his cardboard Lamborghini to the outside world on Thursday. His impressive creation did not go unnoticed. For example, former racing driver Robert Doornbos saw him on Instagram and he immediately showed interest. The car was sold to him within two days.

“Hey Olivier, you did a great job! Come by in Rotterdam sometime? Then you get a tour and you can drive a real Lamborghini”, Doornbos wrote to Olivier. The name Robert Doornbos didn’t immediately say anything to Olivier, but when he saw who it was, a bell started ringing.
On Friday evening he was on the phone with the former Formula 1 driver to seal the sale. The young builder and Lamborghini fan spent more than two hundred hours making the cardboard car.
Olivier was inspired last year when he saw a video of someone making a car out of cardboard.

He set to work with a large mountain of cardboard and a scale model and copied the car in detail. He put it up for sale and got 35 responses from people who were interested.

“He just wanted to sell the car to someone who liked it, he didn’t expect so much attention.”
Olivier: “Robert Doornbos bought it for the showroom of his car shop in Rotterdam. I still owe the tour and driving a Lamborghini. I’d rather not say how much he wants to pay.” He says he can buy a lot of ice creams with it, but there is no real car in it.
And the sale is not yet complete, agrees his mother Marleen. Because Olivier may also get tickets for a Lamborghini race day. “So he has to see what the total price should be.”
