Olivier Romain not kept by Chartres: “I would have liked explanations”

Of all the players, Olivier Romain was undoubtedly the most moved when the jerseys were handed over on Saturday, April 24. In the process, the leader returned with us to his five seasons in Chartres, marked by a rise in ProB in 2018. The last was concluded on Friday with a defeat in Boulogne (93-90) …

Olivier Romain, let’s go back first to the past season. How would you qualify it?
Special.

Mentally harder than sportingly?
Yes, harder mentally due to a lot of factors. Already that of playing in empty rooms. It is complicated. There was also the game that we proposed, a game that I do not particularly like.

“Periodically, we played backwards”

The game ?
I find the ball circulating much less well than last season. There was a lot more individualism and the results weren’t there. Overall it makes for a season, as I said, special.

The unfinished past season also had a mental impact …
I do not know. Why haven’t we managed to produce the same game? I still wonder today. The plan was to aim for the climb again, but periodically we played backwards.

At what point in the season did you feel that things were going wrong?
I will not be able to say exactly when, but, in some matches, we did not have this collective bond that we had last season, where everyone was there to bring their stone to the building. Last year, we had a lot of matches where we were in a bit of a complicated situation and we always managed, collectively, to tip the result in our favor. This year, we failed to do so.

My philosophy is the beautiful game, the extra pass, highlighting the teammates. When you see that sometimes there was not always a return – and I do not speak only for myself, but collectively – I find that a shame. This is my feeling.

We felt demotivation in some matches …
No, not demotivation, rather incomprehension, like not being able to make the extra pass. My philosophy is the beautiful game, the extra pass, highlighting the teammates. When you see that sometimes there was not always a return – and I do not speak only for myself, but collectively – I find that a shame. This is my feeling.

You are going to leave Chartres, the decision of the leaders, it seems?
Yes. My wish was to continue with Chartres. I learned from the coach before the Boulogne match that this would not be the case. I don’t know who made the decision, but I would have liked an explanation. Is it a financial problem, a behavioral problem?

His reaction after the 2019-2020 white season

Haven’t had an explanation yet?
we. If it is a financial question, I would have liked to hear a proposal, we could have discussed. It’s the way that surprised me a little… I had no reason to leave, I felt good here, sportingly and in my private life. My wife had a job, my children were doing well in their school. In addition, we were not far from the family, settled in Yvelines, near Versailles and Maurepas.

” My future ? In N1, to go up in ProB »

And now, how do you see your future?
I still see him in N1, in an ambitious club in order to bring him up to ProB.

What is the best memory you will keep from your five seasons in Chartres?
Accession to ProB, being the main leader, and having brought the team to the Grail.

The biggest disappointment?
The descent of ProB, because we were really not far, we lost a lot of matches very, very few.

Maxwell already gone
The American Du’Vauhgn Maxwell did not participate in the jersey ceremony, this Saturday, April 24. As soon as the season was over, the interior returned to the country. But he has not forgotten his supporters. He had sent them a message of thanks on his Facebook page. “Dear Chartres, as we prepare for our last game, it’s a bittersweet feeling that I get as things come to an end after two seasons here… I’m proud to have been part of one of the best teams in the history of the club, to have established some records and to have been elected MVP (note: season 2019-2020 to 21 of eval)… “Maxwell ((18.8 points and 22.2 of this season), will not be the only player to leave the CCBM. It is up to the coach and his staff to rebuild a competitive team to target the ProB again, around those who are still under contract: the captain and pivot Patrick Clerence, the backmaker Yann Siegwarth and the young Ugo Doumbia.
