Olivier Luminet: “Certain effects of the health crisis on mental health are not yet fully perceived”

It took several months before the words of the psychology experts were listened to, both at the political level and at the media level. Olivier Luminet think this led to the current damage.

“You really have to remember that everyone is affected. People are still tired of these past years. In terms of school dropout, the stakes are immense. Students who are in Bac 3 at the university have experienced 3 years in a row from Covid. They never had a normal year. You really have to take the measure of the help needed to be provided.”

Political awareness on this subject is very real, but it is perhaps not yet sufficient. The Youth Mental Health Plan must absolutely be thought out over the long term, and not on a one-off basis.

Even though our latest report shows things are looking up, it’s still at the general population level. But it must be said that the weakened groups are very, very strong. This is where the problem is major.

For teenagers and young adults, very fragile, it will take time to recover this. And above all, we have to get out of this logic: let’s quickly make up for the time lost in terms of learning, forgetting to invest in what is important, emotions, and which should be learned at school.

Olivier Luminet observes an alarming indicator: the vertiginous drop in student participation in courses, in particular those of 3rd Bac. They no longer understand the interest of coming to class, of sharing relational moments, of discussing with other students, of having reflection and debates.
