Many concertgoers expected that they would go home with merch when they went to Olivia Rodrigo’s performance in St. Louis, Missouri. Not that they would leave the concert hall with free morning-after pills and condoms. Missouri is one of the American states where abortion is illegal, unless the pregnant person is in danger of dying.
Near the women’s restroom at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, there was a table where concertgoers could donate to abortion funds, as well as pick up a kit of contraceptives. Each package contained two boxes of the morning-after pill from the start-up Julie, worth about 42 dollars or 39 euros each. There were also some condoms and small flyers about available abortion organizations in Missouri.
The activists who manned the booth at Rodrigo’s concert are affiliated with the Missouri Abortion Fund, which helps people pay for abortion costs. The products were supplied by the organization Right By You. They bring young people into contact with contraception, provide information about their rights and about abortion care outside the state. The pop star did not specifically ask the organizations to distribute emergency contraception, according to Stephanie Kraft Sheley, project director for Right By You. “She invited us, but it was our decision to take those products and distribute them.”
Last month, Rodrigo launched her ‘Fund 4 Good’ campaign, which aims to protect the reproductive rights of women and girls. Part of the turnover from her new ‘Guts’ tour will go to the fund. As part of the initiative, Rodrigo partnered with the National Network of Abortion Funds, which connected her with local chapters at several stops on the tour. Including the Missouri Abortion Fund.
