Olivia Newton-John died at the age of 73- Corriere.it

from Chiara Maffioletti

Famous for Grease and the role of Sandy alongside John Travolta

When – for the third time in her life – Olivia Newton-John had been told by a doctor that she had aggressive breast cancer, the actress had chosen not to ask what her outlook on life was: “I don’t know How long will I live, I didn’t even want to know from the doctors. I am grateful for every day I have, ”she had said, revealing with that grace of hers that she had quickly made her an icon, which she would have understood every day she remained from then on as a gift. It was 2019.

August 8 was his last. He was 73 years old. “Ms. Olivia Newton-John died peacefully on her ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends,” her husband John Easterling said, posting her announcement on her Facebook page. Adding: “Olivia has been a symbol of triumph and hope for over 30 years, sharing her journey with breast cancer. Her inspiration in healing and pioneering experience with plant medicine continues with the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, dedicated to research in plant medicine and cancer. Instead of flowers, the family asks that every donation be made in memory of her to the Olivia Newton-John Foundation ». A few words, therefore, before invoking the right to a little silence: “We ask everyone to respect the privacy of the family in this very difficult moment”.

A few words though, which also hint at how much the message left by the actress with the kind smile and the iron temperament does not end with yesterday. If the general public had learned to love her mainly for her unforgettable role as Sandy Olsson in Grease (it was 1978), over time everyone had understood how many things this actress had in common with that character: kind and sweet, she was able to face the enormous challenge of the disease with determination and courage.

On television, in one of his last appearances, a few years ago, he also talked about death: «As a human being, everyone has a perspective on life. Our condition is to die, sooner or later. Cancer makes you think about this but basically no one can know when it will happen ». And so, after having already had breast cancer twice more, in 1992 and 2013, after having undergone a mastectomy and heavy chemotherapy, she had decided to go through the disease once again without being crushed by her weight, but rather by deciding to take a break from work to devote oneself to others, precisely through his association. Even then, she had called herself lucky. “Lucky to have gone through this three times and still be here.”

Her voice, for her who was born as a singer, in Australia (music has always remained her great one passion and in his career he has sold over one hundred million records), was therefore more important than ever, a vehicle of powerful messages capable of making a difference for many people. Including her dear friend of hers and her great love on her screen John Travolta, linked to her by that musical that had changed everything for both of them. In remembering her, Travolta is back to being that Danny Zuko who doted on her, despite her tough airs. «My dear Olivia – wrote the actor shortly after the announcement of the death of his colleague -, you have done so much to make our lives better. Your impact was incredible … I loved you so much. We will meet again along the way and we will be united again, together again. I’ve always been yours from the first moment I saw you and always will be. Your Danny, your John. ‘
