Olena Zelenská appeared on the cover of Vogue magazine, the photos sparked a debate

The magazine talks about Zelenská as the face of the conflict, which showed the world the suffering of citizens. However, one of the most striking elements of the article is the accompanying photo shoot by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz, which some readers find controversial. Social networking sites such as Twitter sparked major debates after the images were released.

In the pictures, Zelenská is captured in various places in Ukraine. In one of the photos, she is standing next to a group of female soldiers at Antonov Airport in Hostomel. In other pictures, she hugs her husband, President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his office, and in another, she sits on the steps of a shelter surrounded by bags filled with sand.

According to some Twitter users, real heroes, such as soldiers, doctors or volunteers, should appear in prestigious photos. According to others, there is no need to make art out of war.

Several media have already reported on the article, which will be published in the October issue of the magazine, and photos have appeared on social networks.

In the text entitled “Portrait of Courage”, Zelenska states that since February 24, when the war began, she has lived through the most terrible months of her life, just like all Ukrainians. At the same time, she added that she longs for victory.

“I like being behind the scenes, that’s what I enjoy,” the first lady told the magazine. Moving to the center of world attention was said to be difficult for her.

Olena Zelenská grew up in the city of Kryvyi Rih in Ukraine, where coincidentally her future husband also grew up. They met during their studies. Although Zelenská studied architecture, she later became a screenwriter. In 2003, after an eight-year relationship, she married Zelensky, and a year later their first daughter was born. In 2013, a son was born. Although Zelenska had no plans to get involved in the world of politics, her husband won the Ukrainian presidential election in April 2019 with more than 73 percent of the vote.

After the Russian invasion, she appeared in public for the first time in early May, when the American First Lady Jill Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and rock singer Bono from the U2 group made a surprise visit to Ukraine.
