INDIA – A group of researchers in India managed to find dinosaur fossils which is believed to be the oldest plant-eating dinosaur in the world. What’s the story?

Scientists from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee and the Geological Survey of India (GSI) have discovered a dinosaur fossil believed to be the oldest plant-eating dinosaur in the world.

In a report summarized in Scientific Reports recently, it was stated that the dinosaur fossil was found in the Thar desert in Rajasthan, India.

The location of the discovery made the researchers call the dinosaur Tharosaurus indicus. In the report, the researchers also conveyed the message of the need for deeper research in India regarding prehistoric life.

The discovery of the Tharosaurus indicus fossil is proof that the region in the country of curry does have an important role. Moreover, the fact that Tharosaurus indicus is believed to be the oldest plant-eating dinosaur in the world.

“The Thar Desert is currently a very dry and hot region in western India. But in the Mesozoic era, the area was a tropical coastline along the Tethys Ocean, inhabited by dinosaurs and sea creatures,” wrote the report quoted by the New York Times, Tuesday (22/8).

The most recent discovery in the desert, dating back 167 million years, belongs to a group of dinosaurs called dicraeosaurids, which ate long-necked plants (though not as long as their close relatives).

This is the first group to be discovered in India, and the oldest ever discovered in the world’s fossil record.

Dr Sunil Bajpai from GSI said the search for fossils in the Thar Desert had started in 2019. This effort was indeed carried out to reveal the hidden history of the region.
