In Brazil, a week before the 128th birthday, Jose Paulino Gomes, who is considered by many to be the oldest person in the world, died.

He died at his home in Corrego del Café in Pedra Bonita, Minas Gerais on Friday 28 July. His 1917 marriage certificate states that the man was born on August 4, 1895.
If this is true, then it follows that Gomes was born before the death of Queen Victoria, survived both world wars, a pandemic and other shocks.
According to a legal adviser, the Brazilian could indeed have been born before 1900. This is because the marriage certificate dates from 1917, and men rarely married at 17.
The current record holder, according to the Guinness Book of Records, is 115-year-old Spanish Maria Branas Morera. Whether the experts will be able to accurately establish the real age of Gomes is unknown.
