In a groundbreaking discovery, scientists in southwest England have unearthed the oldest fossilized forest ever found on Earth. This remarkable finding, which dates back 390 million years, surpasses the previous record held by a forest in New York state by a staggering 4 million years. The fossils were discovered in the high sandstone cliffs on the southern side of the Bristol Channel near Minehead, close to a holiday park.

The ancient forest, composed of trees known as Calamophyton, bears a striking resemblance to palm trees with their thin, hollow trunks. Although they lacked leaves, these trees featured twig-like structures that covered their branches. According to Neil Davies, the first author of the study and a lecturer at the University of Cambridge’s Earth Sciences department, the Calamophyton trees reached heights of 2-4 meters (6.6-13.1 feet) and shed branches as they grew.

The forest belongs to the Devonian Period, a time span ranging from 419 million to 358 million years ago when life began transitioning onto land. These trees played a crucial role in stabilizing riverbanks and coastlines by trapping sediment in their root systems. Davies explains that they actively shaped their environment by corralling water and creating small channels. This discovery sheds light on the rapid development of early forests, as the New York forest, which was just 4 million years younger than the one in England, exhibited a greater variety of species.

The Calamophyton trees also provided a habitat for invertebrates living on the forest floor. The team of scientists discovered evidence of footprints and tail drags left by these early anthropods. Although physical remains were scarce, Davies estimates that the largest anthropods were around 5-10 centimeters (2-4 inches) wide. The team also found evidence that these arthropods would bury themselves in the sediment on the forest floor to prevent dehydration in the warm, semi-arid climate.

Interestingly, the cliffs where the fossils were found, known as the Hangman Sandstone Formation, were once connected to parts of present-day Germany and Belgium rather than England. Similar fossils from wood fragments washed out to sea have been discovered in these areas, aiding study co-author Christopher Berry, a palaeobotanist at Cardiff University’s School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, in identifying the fossils found in England.

This groundbreaking discovery has provided scientists with an unprecedented opportunity to study the ecology of the earliest forest and gain insights into the environment in which Calamophyton trees thrived. The unique preservation of these ancient trees has been made possible by a series of fortunate events, including earthquakes in a 352-million-year-old rift-lake system now exposed in New Brunswick, Canada.
