Oldest Footprints of Homo heidelbergensis Found in Germany

Footprints have been found in Germany that are about 300,000 years old. They are from the a man from Heidelbergan extinct human species.

The three footprints are the oldest ever discovered in Germany. Archaeologists also found traces of prehistoric elephants and rhinoceroses.

Homo heidelbergensis was an ancestor of both Homo sapiens (our species) and Neanderthals. The human species lived from about 700,000 years to about 200,000 years ago.

The footprints were found at an archaeological site near the city of Schöningen. There may have been a lake a few kilometers long and several hundred meters wide at the site.

Elephants and rhinoceroses would have walked on the shore to drink and swim. People lived in small groups at the edge of the lake, say researchers at the University of Tübingen.

Two out of three footprints are probably those of children or young people. According to researchers, this indicates that a family has been walking around, and that they are not adult hunters.
