Older people’s organizations criticize possible NMBS fare changes: “Long routes will become more expensive”

With the new rates of the NMBS, train tickets for people over 65 will become more expensive, senior citizen organizations fear. That’s what De Morgen reported.

Last year, new rates for people over 65 were discussed in the railway’s new management contract. From next year, they may no longer be able to buy a ticket for a fixed price of 8.30 euros there and back during off-peak hours. Instead, they get a 40 percent discount on the normal ticket price.

With these rates, NMBS hopes to bring more clarity to all types of tickets that you can buy. Twelve elderly organizations call NMBS’s plans to adjust fares for people over 65 completely unacceptable.

This works out cheaper on short distances, but elderly organizations fear that it will be more expensive on longer journeys. For example, a ride from Antwerp to Ostend would amount to 26 euros, according to OKRA. After De Lijn’s new timetable, the NMBS rate plans are hitting hard. The organizations denounce the elderly being pushed into the car again.
