Older Macs cannot play Netflix videos in 4K

Netflix reports this on his website customer service. To play 4K videos, a Mac with the Apple T2 security chip is required, the streaming service writes. It has only been used in Macs since 2018.

It means that Apple computers three years or older will still not be able to play videos in the highest resolution after the update to macOS Big Sur. That while those same Macs are able to play 4K images in other apps.

It is not clear why the T2 chip is required to run the 4K images, but Apple said earlier that the chip can process videos in the HEVC format faster. Netflix may be using this file type in the higher resolution.

Later this year

Apple will release macOS Big Sur for supported computers later this year. The update also includes many other innovations, including a custom design.

A recent Apple TV update included software changes that enable 4K footage in the YouTube app. For a long time, it showed videos in a maximum 1080p resolution.
