(ANSA) – ROME, OCTOBER 31 – She ate artichoke soup bought at the supermarket and died. The death of an elderly woman which occurred at the end of September in Rome due to botulinum poisoning is being investigated. The news was published today in the Roman pages of Repubblica. The prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation for manslaughter against unknown persons and the matter is being investigated by the Nas police. The woman had bought the artichoke soup in a supermarket in the capital. The daughter, who had tasted the same soup, was also hospitalized. Following the complaint from the victim’s family, the prosecutor’s office opened an investigation. The investigators – the newspaper reports – have started checks to trace the production chain and the batch of soup eaten by the victim which, however, had expired in the meantime and was therefore replaced on the shelves. The hypothesis is that the old woman’s death was caused by the bacteria in the soup. It remains to be established whether it was already present in the package before purchase or whether the woman stored the product poorly at home and therefore the botulinum developed later.
