Old steel becomes modern art

Magdeburg – A new employee now welcomes everyone who comes to the waste incineration plant (MHKW) in Magdeburg-Rothensee. Made from old, rusty steel, the so-called “Kraftwerker” stands at the entrance to the company premises and clearly towers over the visitors.

The impressive metal work of art was welded together by the artist Pawel Lickas, who had received a corresponding order from the supply and disposal company. The steel scrap comes from almost a hundred years of industrial history, according to the MHKW. The idea for the artificial figure came from managing director Rolf Oesterhoff. “It is intended to serve as a reminder for the many power plant workers who worked here at the site,” he explains.

New incineration plant will be presented at open day

During the construction work for the new incineration plant, the so-called Block 3, a lot of steel from the past decades was found, for example from the old power plant from 1930. The implementation with artist Pawel Lickas of creating such an impressive figure in practice was a great challenge for everyone involved.

Anyone who wants to see the work of art up close will have a good opportunity to do so on Saturday, August 24, 2024. That is when the MHKW will be holding an open day. In addition to the “Kraftwerker”, the new incineration plant will also be presented, which will be officially inaugurated the day before.

Incinerated waste produces district heating and electricity

With the additional high-performance furnace, even more waste can be burned in the future to produce district heating for the people of Magdeburg, among other things. The MHKW already reports that 50,000 households can be supplied with it. In addition, 360,000 megawatt hours are generated from the 650,000 tons of waste burned each year. The new block will increase these values again accordingly.
