The train has been an important mode of transport for mankind for many years. Mid-century train travel is making a comeback thanks to these 1940s-inspired train journeys along the Hudson River. The dream of going back in time becomes a reality thanks to Hudson River Rail.
The company, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, is offering rides on restored 1948 railcars. The first departure, running between New York City and Albany, will begin Feb. 10 on the company’s recently announced 2023 schedule.

“Our train runs on the same tracks the train ran on in the 1940s,” Kevin Phalon, executive director of the United Railroad Historical Society of NJ, Hudson River Rail Excursions tells Travel + Leisure. “People looked out the same windows in 1948 at the same view we see 75 years later.” You can’t get any closer to time travel yet.
Travelers grab the well-known 20th Century Limited. This was an express train on the New York Central Railroad from 1902 to 1967. The train traveled between Grand Central Terminal in New York City and LaSalle Street Station in Chicago, Illinois, along the railroad’s “Water Level Route.”
“The majority of our passengers are millennials looking for a unique experience, but don’t necessarily know the backstory of the 20th Century Limited,” said Kevin Phalon, executive director of the United Railroad Historical Society of NJ.
‘However, we also have many train enthusiasts for whom this trip is a bucket list item. It’s always special to see older people share their stories with younger people, who they probably wouldn’t be out with if it weren’t for our train.’
